Melbourne Graduate School of Education Master of Teaching

Invitation from the Dean

If you have a passion for learning and a genuine enthusiasm to impart knowledge and bring out the best in others, then teaching is the career for you.

Teaching is one of the most challenging and most rewarding professions there is; the Master of Teaching is designed to thoroughly prepare you for it.

This groundbreaking program has been designed by some of Australia’s leading teacher educators and is unlike any other pre-service teacher education qualification in the country. It is based on a clinical teaching model, which means you will be in classrooms from the first few weeks of semester. You will be supported by a network of school and university-based experts who will provide a strong link between university theory and classroom practice.

Our teacher candidates report that the amount of time they spend in schools is hugely beneficial. They also say the Master of Teaching is hard work; and it certainly is! Pre-service teachers need to develop a deep knowledge of their discipline while learning a huge range of new skills, ranging from classroom management to effective intervention strategies, to name just two.

This hard work pays off; our 2008 evaluation told us that Master of Teaching candidates tend to be at the same level as beginning teachers after just one semester on the program. We have also been flooded with positive feedback from Principals in our partner schools, many of whom snap our graduates up as soon as they can. Some candidates have even been tagged for employment mid-year.

If you are considering teaching as a career, I encourage you to apply for a place on the Master of Teaching; you won’t regret it.
