Melbourne Graduate School of Education International Students

School Support Services

The Melbourne Graduate School of Education (MGSE) prides itself on providing quality service for all students. We recognise that many international students have unique issues not encountered by local students. The MGSE has a designated Student Experience and Support Team (SES Team) who provide ongoing support and assistance to all students. The SES Team works closely with a range of wellbeing and enrichment services within the university to assist MGSE students in accessing the support they require to succeed academically, personally and professionally. Contact the Education Student Centre Education Student Centre for further information.

Academic Support

The Academic Skills Unit (ASU) offers advice and instruction on academic and language skills, providing workshops, classes, online courses and printed resources covering a broad range of study skills and written and oral communication. Individual tutorials can be arranged to focus on specific needs.

An ASU Adviser works in the Education Student Centre in the Alice Hoy Building. Students can make an appointment for an individual tutorial by contacting the Education Student Centre.

MGSE organises a series of workshops throughout each semester to help you with your academic work. These workshops cover areas including writing, referencing, pronunciation, exam preparation and more.

The ASU, in conjunction with the MGSE, is currently developing a series of workshops for 2011. These classes are designed for students who want to improve their skills in a number of areas.

AIRport is an Academic Interactive Resources portal which provides a range of interactive online academic literacy materials. These resources are expected to be of particular benefit to new students, international students and students from non-English speaking backgrounds.

The School of Graduate Research (SGR) provides Upskills - a series of short courses and seminars open to all University of Melbourne postgraduate students.

School Placement Support

MGSE organises a program of support to assist with your placement.  The workshops are 12-18 hours in total and cover topics such as: teacher-student interactions, developing a classroom presence and interacting with supervisors.

Social Support

International students meet regularly throughout the year for coffee, lunches and outings. These informal get-togethers provide a wonderful opportunity to get to know other international students in the MGSE. If you would like to be placed on the mailing list to receive information about upcoming events, please contact Katherine Petrucco.
